GENETICALLY MODIFIED ?


Both Mr N and Master N rarely enthuse about my culinary efforts (see above, yesterday's lunch - OK so it's only a fish cake, but quite tasty and nicely presented.) 
It must be in the genes and not my dreadful cooking because Master N's three half brothers shower me with praise:
"Oooh Mum - is this home-made?"
"It's gorgeous - so light!"
"Can we take the left-overs home?" etc.
Indeed, the only vaguely negative remark I can remember one of them making was during our brief flirtation with vegetarianism:
"Mum, what's tofu for...?"

Sometimes I feel Mr N & Son need a little jolt out of their complacency, and for this I have a secret collection of cookery books...


...this one is useful.

I think I'll go with this tempting 70s-style Salami Salad!
Ah - revenge is sweet...

  1. Yes please - thank you very much to the first photo, but, no thank you, to the 70s salami salad. I cannot imagine anything less tempting.

    1. I only realised recently how unappealing those 1960s & 1970s vividly coloured photographs make the recipes seem - I have to go back to earlier publications before I'm tempted!

    1. The book is actually a good read and I've a feeling that Master N would enjoy most of the down-home recipes and would certainly love the West Virginia country folk's company.

  3. I think I would find the White Trash cookbook fascinating....not sure if it would be fascinating enough to try making anything from it, but reading it must be a joy. J.

  4. have to confess I have plenty of uses for Tofu but none of them involve actually eating it!

    I have cousins in USA who have moved from California to South Carolina(long story) but when we go stay we always go out to eat at places with food similar to your books and most of it is great, if you ask them to go easy on the mayo/dressing/anything that makes it taste like what it isn't.
    Grits realy ARE grit though, and I don't think I'd want them again!

    1. Yes - I feel a bit guilty about featuring the book as it is a fascinating read and a good antidote to some overly tarted-up cuisine.

  5. Very 'pictures on plates' presentation. Did my eyes deceive me, were there seeds on the top of the fish cakes? Or was it home-made tartare sauce with attitude?

  6. Remind me not to order a copy of that book, lost me at the retain the grease comment! Ten out of ten for presentation on the lunch front, lovely little floral display very impressed with your efforts, I usually just grab a sandwich and run! jayne x
