AFTER THE EVENT

A lunchtime stroll round a quintessentially Yorkshire village - peaceful, pretty and just a little eccentric - this is Nun Monkton, at the end of a road to nowhere.

The village generously shares its green with motley herd of cows...

...and the ducks are happy to share their pond.

There is a hidden treasure in the church of Saint Mary, built around the remains of an Anglo Norman Priory - a superb stained glass window by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris.

A grassy path leads down to the river...

Some things are definitely worth celebrating.

    1. Yes, this one small village. It never fails to inspire us whenever we take this little diversion from our road home.

  2. Great photos Nilly....love the contrast of the manicured hedge and grass strip with the wild, pony paddock.

    1. Nun Monkton is always worth a visit if you are in the York area - so long as you don't mind close encounters with Highland cattle!

  3. Lovely quintessential English village - the stained glass window attracts me strongly, I am a great fan of Wm Morris and his group. The picture of the window is superb, I always have difficulty getting good photos of stained glass.

    1. Thank you Rosemary. I am a bit of a technophobe, especially with cameras, but my new one takes quite good photos in dark churches etc. - without a flash. Mine were better than Mr N's for once.

  5. Thank you Maria! It's wonderful to see the cows roaming free on the village green - not a cattle grid in sight either so I'm not sure why they don't all wander off.

  8. The greatest thing about this place was its interesting concept, and dare i say its sexy and seductive! The wood paneling makes the entire space feel warm and intimate. The seats are modern and comfortable.
