EAST ANGLIAN EASTER

This place is very popular! We followed the dog-walkers...

... to Holkham Beach in North Norfolk, a windy wilderness. This Easter trip was supposed to be a big antiques safari, but the weather was so good we could not resist tramping along some of East Anglia's beaches in the sunshine. I cannot decide which bit of Britain's varied coastline is my favourite. Do you have special seaside place?

Holkham Beach

Around and down the coast, as the gull flies...

... to Walberswick Creek in Suffolk where, 30 years ago, we went camping and fishing for crabs. Perhaps that's the unique thing about beaches - the memories they hold for us last a lifetime. Inevitably, we change - in towns and villages buildings decay and others are built - but beaches stay the same, give or take the odd bit of coastal erosion.

Walberswick Beach

Could this be the most poplar beach in East Anglia?

I hear it is a favourite with the metropolitan middle classes; writers, artists, thespians and the like. We did encounter actress, author and comedian Meera Syal who called to her son to move out of Mr N's path (I know he badly needs a haircut but, really, he didn't look too scary.)

Do you know it?

Every girl loves a nice beach hut - in Southwold!

  1. Just what I needed this morning a walk along a beach. Southwold is one of my favs. Grandad Birch grew up in Halesworth just up the road.

    1. I only really feel at home near the sea and East Anglia has an extra cosy homeliness. That accent - it reminds me of Granny. I wonder if Grandad Birch had it?

  2. We headed to the coast too, although I think it must have been a bit warmer down here ... we were in shorts and tees, unlike you in hat and scarf!
We do love the Dorset, north Devon and Cornish coasts.

    1. I must admit it's the southern beaches that do it for me too. And Tenby is hard to beat!

  4. The beach huts are charming! What a great beach! My favorite beach is Steps Beach on nantucket Island - private and secluded. SHHH dont tell anyone! Best to send the crowds to Surfside or Cisco!

    1. Nantucket is dreamy - with James Taylor singing to me in the background...

  5. I like Holkham, there is something about its isolation but I also like the beaches of South Devon and Dorset and Cornwall, they all have their special charm.

  6. I love pootling about on a beach just as much as I did when I was a child. Splat Cove in Salcombe was a favourite place but the footpath collapsed and it became inaccessible.
Southwold's beach huts are fabulous. I wanted to photograph each 'tableaux vivant' when I was there. It would make a delightful book to have an image of the closed hut followed by another with the interior and occupants. I felt it too intrusive to point my camera at them but would have loved to have done so!

  7. Forgive my recent absence, Nilly - especially when you've been writing about one of my favourite parts of the world - and Southwold beach in particular. Gorgeous when the sun shines. Does a man still take you across the river to Walberswick in his rowing boat? Axxx
