COLD WEATHER ANTIQUES HUNTING

The last big antiques events of the year saw freezing conditions at the huge Lincoln Showground Fair, followed quickly by the even huger, even chillier Newark International event. In fact, my cold-defying layers of clothing were so thick that my stiff little arms gave up all efforts to whip out my camera to record proceedings. (I am still kicking myself for failing to take a snap of the Tibetan monk in saffron robes, bare legs, sandals and a parka! Had he taken a wrong turn?) We sold a lot of stuff - and I bought a bit too; needlework, tins and things

My last-minute impulse buy seems to have been a result of the mind-numbing cold and my current obsession with sorting old family photographs...

  1. I treated myself to a most wonderful little garment called a Harimaki (available on both ebay and amazon) which is a boob-tube shape and just fits on the waist and above and below a bit and keeps all those bits snuggly- as the Chinese say if the kidneys are warm then the body is warm.
Then I started to think could I knit one in cashmere?
    Oooooh divine!

  2. Thank you! I will have look for a Harimaki as the sub-zero season has only just begun. I have noticed that the Japanese clothing company Uniqlo do something similar in their Heattech range which they call a "body warmer"

I have a couple of their tops & some leggings - at the moment they have an Orla Keily range - Heattech designer T shirts at £9.90!

  3. Having stood on Tynemouth Station with a biting wind all day, I can sympathise with you Nilly. I had eight layers on and still was frozen to the marrow. I actually cried when I got in as I felt so miserable. Nothing protects you from the wind chill factor. Glad you sold lots and bought lots too. I must say your family love their hats, very stylish. Is that you in the last photograph? jayne x

  4. You poor thing, I absolutely hate being cold, it is the most miserable thing. Those kidney warmers sound just the thing, I shall investigate.

I love your hat and your glasses. Aren't you lucky to know all the names of your ancestors?

    1. So do I - but I'm never sure if any of them suit me but I do like vintage Granny styles.

  9. 'What larks Nilly!'

The last 'old' girl looks a real character. She evaded me at every turn and Snickleway in York. I sought her here and I I thought I sought her there... But no... just the glimpse of her coat-tails scuttling oft down an alley.
