STATELY STALLHOLDERS

Rain stopped play for a couple of months, but on Sunday our very own Yorkshire Country House Car Boot Sale at Sledmere House took place at last. Sadly, one very special stallholder, Zandra Rhodes, could not be present at this rescheduled event but plenty of jolly aristos joined in the fun and played to the crowd for our amusement.

Ladies of every kind were up at dawn displaying their wares, which looked very lovely against a backdrop of ancient sycamores and beeches.

Back at home I discovered that I had caught one of my favourite local artist/designers on camera. Here is Mark Hearld, probably hunting for a special Staffordshire figure to add to his collection. If you would like to see his wonderful  work please click on the link above.

And, this being an outdoors event, there were plenty of long-suffering little companions around...

...and a few grumpy ones.

Grrrrrr!!!

  1. Fantastic Nilly - Mark Hearld is a great favourite of my youngest sons. They have pictures of his all over their house. For my last birthday he sent me a Mark Hearld colourful cut out bird that hangs on a ribbon in my kitchen where it twirls merrily around.

    1. How interesting Rosemary! I often buy his greetings cards - then I don't send them because I like them so much. I see him quite often around York, looking for antiques like us, and, once, I dared to tell him that I admired his work.

  2. What a lovely fair Nilly. Next time it's on, can you let me know and I will arrange to be visiting my son in York. What fun!

I must confess I've never heard of Mark Hearld, where can I buy his cards? I love the sound of Rosemary's cut bird swooping around her kitchen.

P.S. I live about 400 metres down the hill from the pond. I've probably scuttled past you picnicing there as I shot up to the shops!

    2. I must buy one of those for my bird-loving friend! I see Mark's print-maker friend Emily Sutton around York too. I love their work and also the fact that we can buy such beautifully designed items for a modest sum.

  3. Oops... sounds like the bird's injured, that would never do. Rosemary might be tempted to find another 23 to fill a pie.

Err... LL you awake yet? This is what happens when you shoot off a comment before climbing out of your jim-jams.

    1. The Stately Car Boot is on every July and is usually announced on the Sledmere House website in the events section. It's near Malton as I'm sure you know from your time in York. You can buy Mark Hearld's cards and other things that he's designed (including Rosemary's bird!)at the Tate Gallery's online shop.

    1. Yes it was great fun, as it always is. I do believe there is a similar event over your way at Sizergh Castle. I have a friend who went this year - a good idea to have a stall & go in early, I'll be bound!

    1. Prices were good & loads of people were buying. Yes, it's on every year, usually in July but this year the ground was too wet then. It's well worth the trip - the house & gallery are open too.

    1. We did find some treasures - I was happy with amber beads and a little Scandinavian bentwood box, while Mr N found some serious bloke's stuff(!) "Old-timers" are full of tales of what used to turn up, before our time.

    1. What I really wanted this time was a pleasingly shabby French gilt-framed mirror, but no luck there. I did buy some lovely beads and some pretty Victorian patchwork pieces that should be enough for a cushion.

  12. A very good fleamarket in the North East is at Tynemouth Railway Station. It is held every Saturday & Sunday, all year round:

Another blogger has written about this fleamarket here:
